Streaming Mind Portfolio and Gallery :: Virtual Worlds
"Why do you spend so much time on stuff that isn't real?"
A lot of people who spend lots of time in Virtual Worlds get asked that question. For the uninitiated, virtual worlds are the digital spaces in which Virtual Reality happens and it's widely believed that virtual worlds in 2007 are approaching the state the World Wide Web was in back in 1997. The one I happen to be the most involved with is Second Life®.
I'll tell you what's not fake about virtual worlds; There are real people on the other end at real keyboards typing real words with real meanings. How much of their first life they decide to let bleed through to their second is up to them Also, the hours spent at the computer in Photoshop, 3D modelers, script editors and Second Life's built-in 3d tools? Those are very real as well.
Current Work:
Theatron 3
A collaboration of Beta Technologies and King's College Visualization Lab, UK. Over the course of 18 months, the Theatron project aims to bring the models of 18 historic theatre buildings into the world of Second Life as an educational resource for students and teachers. Eventual plans include museum-like exhibits, interactive studies and virtual performances of actual theatrical works.
